Candle Warmer Not Working? Your Simple Troubleshooting Guide (and How to Find the Right Bulb)

You've switched on your warmer, popped your favourite candle underneath, and settled in for that beautiful fragrance.

But something's not quite right.

Maybe the light won't come on.
Maybe you can barely smell a thing.
Or maybe the wax just isn't melting the way it used to.

Don't worry. Most candle warmer problems have a simple fix, and you can usually sort them out in a few minutes at home.

Here's our go-to troubleshooting guide.

Problem 1: My Warmer Won't Turn On

Before anything else, run through these quick checks:

  • Is it plugged in properly and switched on at the wall?

  • Try another power point, or plug a different appliance into the same one to make sure the outlet is working.

  • If your warmer has a dimmer or timer, check it isn't turned all the way down or switched to "off".

If all of that checks out, the most common culprit by far is simply a blown bulb.

Warmer bulbs work hard. They're the heat source that melts your wax, so just like any light bulb, they eventually need replacing. The good news? It's quick, easy and inexpensive.

How to Find the Right Replacement Bulb

Different warmers use different bulbs, and using the wrong one can affect how well your warmer melts the wax. That's why we make a specific bulb for each style.

Our best tip: take out your old bulb and compare it with the bulb photos on our website before ordering.

Here's a quick guide:

💡 Changing Your Bulb Safely

  • Switch off and unplug your warmer first.

  • Let it cool completely. Bulbs get very hot during use.

  • Remove the old bulb gently and fit the new one, following the instructions that came with your warmer.

  • Only use the replacement bulb designed for your warmer.

Handy tip: keep a spare bulb in the cupboard so you're never left without your favourite fragrance.

Problem 2: I Can't Smell My Candle

This is one of the questions we hear most. Here are the usual reasons:

🕯 The Candle Is Sitting Too Far From the Bulb

Warmers work by melting the top layer of wax. If the candle is sitting too low, the heat may not be reaching it properly. If your warmer is height adjustable, raise or lower it so the bulb sits comfortably above the candle. As your candle gets lower over time, you may need to adjust it again.

👃 You've Gone "Nose Blind"

This one surprises a lot of people!

When you're around the same scent for a while, your nose gets used to it and stops noticing it as much, even though everyone walking in the door can smell it beautifully. Step outside for a few minutes and come back in, or try rotating between a couple of different fragrances.

🏠 The Room Is Too Big

A small candle in a large, open-plan space can struggle to fill the room. Try moving your warmer to a smaller area, or use more than one warmer in bigger spaces.

🌬 There's Too Much Airflow

Ceiling fans, air conditioning and open windows can carry fragrance away quickly. Place your warmer away from direct drafts.

⏳ The Fragrance Has Been Used Up

Over time, the fragrance oils in the wax are released and the scent naturally fades, even if there's still plenty of wax left. If your candle has been warmed for many hours and the scent has faded, it's probably time for a fresh one.

Problem 3: The Wax Isn't Melting Evenly

  • Check the candle is centred directly under the bulb.

  • Make sure the candle jar fits your warmer. Very wide jars may not melt all the way to the edges.

  • Check the bulb itself. An old or incorrect bulb may not give off enough warmth.

Problem 4: Cleaning Wax Out of a Melt Warmer Dish

Ready to change scents in your melt warmer? Two easy ways:

  • The cotton ball method: while the wax is melted (but not too hot), carefully soak it up with a few cotton balls or pads, then wipe the dish clean.

  • The freezer method: if your dish is removable, let the wax set, pop the dish in the freezer for 10–15 minutes, and the wax should pop right out.

Always unplug your warmer and handle warm wax with care.
